Leading Matters #46 David Ralph Host Join Up Dots

David Ralph is the host of an incredibly entertaining and successful podcast, Join Up Dots. On this episode of Leading matters David shares his story of how he developed his show, and why tapping into the opportunities and talents we develop over the course of a career make all the difference.

How Far Back Can You Find Inspiration?
David shares a great story about coming across some tapes that he had made when he was just nine years of age. He would interview adults in different professions, and when he played them back later in life, he realized that this skill of his had manifested itself in areas of his career as a corporate trainer.

Have A Destination In Mind
Hardcore planning can sometimes keep us standing still, but having at least a general idea of theDavid-ralph-join-up-dots direction in which you want to head pays dividends. At least this is what David believes, and this five-year plan has served him well since he started Join Up Dots in the winter of 2014

Find Your Style
If you listen to David’s show, you will immediately realize that he has a sort of free flowing biting interview style. The approach makes for a great show, and David is quick to mention that he has purposefully given himself over to what he has discovered to be his natural strengths.

Be In Control
David has done hundreds of episodes and has learned it is important for him to stay in control of the conversation. Good advice for anyone who seeks to tap into a specific type of conversational content that they wish to use for their marketing efforts. Maintain control over the narrative.

Empathy is Gold
A manager early in David’s career told him that we shouldn’t treat the customer as we would like to be treated, but rather treat the customer the way that the customer wishes to be treated. An important nuance that has served David well when he works to engage his guests.

On The Medium of Podcasting
David believes two things about podcasting. (1) Podcasting will mature more quickly than all of the raw video options available today (think Facebook Live or Periscope). (2) Every company ought to have an internal podcast that serves to bridge the gap between leadership and ‘front-line’ worker.
