Leading Matters # 7: Kyle Scott Founder Crossing Broad

Why does a blog covering sports in the Philadelphia region matter to you? Because the hard work behind driving the property to well over 300k monthly visitors illustrates the power of identifying market opportunity, and of having the discipline to consistently and relentlessly execute to capitalize on that opportunity.

Today’s guest is Kyle Scott, and his sports blog Crossing Broad covers sports from a decidedly fankyle scott crossing broad sm centric perspective.   Kyle understands well that professional sport is an entertainment business, and he decided early to cover the region’s professional sports teams from that angle. What you will find on Crossing Broad you’re likely not to find in the region’s ‘mainstream’ sports media outlets such as Comcast Sports Net or Philly.com. One day Crossing Broad will cover the Instagram shenanigans of an Eagles wide receiver, and the next you might find the Tinder profiles of one of the Philadelphia Flyers.   The result is a much more precise reflection of how sport is consumed and followed across the Delaware Valley.

Some of the highlights of my interview with Kyle:

  • The importance of adding value to the marketplace.
  • How he identified a gap that gave him opportunity.
  • Capitalizing on media by using each format’s natural structure.
  • Monetization techniques and what has worked for him.
  • Why radio and print fail when they try to apply their current approach to new media formats.
  • The importance of differentiating by doing something different.

This one runs a little long at nearly 45 minutes, but it is both an interesting and valuable discussion. There is much to be learned from the success that Kyle has had and the strategy and tactics he’s used to earn that success.   Enjoy.
